Abstract: Describes and assesses two new techniques for studying tooth material. Presents backscattered electron image of dental tissue as more accurate method of accessing growth layer groups compared with transmitted light, and investigates possibility of fine scale changes in mineralisation process in connection to recorded life history events of five female Arctocephalus gazella.
