Abstract: Reports results of model study examining role of Pacific water in decline of sea ice during summer 2007, when extent plunged to record low, and most of Pacific sector of Arctic Ocean was ice-free. Model generally agrees with observations in showing considerable seasonal and interannual variability of Pacific Water inflow at Bering Strait in response to changes in atmospheric circulation. During summer 2007 anomalously strong southerly winds over Pacific sector of Arctic Ocean strengthened ocean circulation and brought more Pacific water into Arctic than recent (2000-2006) average. Additional heat brought by inflow was sufficient to melt additional 0.5 m of ice over whole Chukchi Sea.
