| Abstract: | Analysis of changes in community structure, abundance and distribution of fossil nanoplankton from sediment cores shows biogeographic zonation of Southern Ocean during Paleogene. Includes data for Middle Palaeocene, Eocene and Oligocene which show abrupt change in climatic conditions towards end of period, with smooth transition from tropical to subtropical climate in Paleocene-Eocene becoming more clearly defined change. Temperate and sub-Antarctic zones expanded rapidly from Late Oligocene to Miocene. |
