Record #187257:

The historical development of McMurdo station, Antarctica, an environmental perspective / Andrew G. Klein, and 6 others.

Title: The historical development of McMurdo station, Antarctica, an environmental perspective / Andrew G. Klein, and 6 others.
Author(s): Klein, Andrew G.
Date: 2008.
In: Polar Geography. (2008.), Vol. 31(3-4) (2008)
Abstract: Uses extensive collection of aerial photographs to map changes in building, fuel storage tanks, roads and physically disturbed areas at McMurdo station since its establishment in 1956. From 1956 and continuing through 1960s station expanded rapidly, and from 1970 to present area impacted by human activities has increased at much decreased rate, with current station operations largely confined to areas already impacted in first 10-15 years of operations. Spatio-temporal perspective on McMurdo station's growth provides baseline for monitoring future changes in spatial extent of areas impacted by human activities, as required by 1991 Madrid Protocol.
