Abstract: Reports study comparing acoustic estimates of walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) abundance. Study comprises five experiments in four distinct areas, and deploys conventional and noise-reduced surveying vessels in different formations to assess extent to which noise from vessels influence fish distribution. Finds that noise reduction can reduce vessel avoidance; also that vessel avoidance behaviour is variable, and current understanding of processes influencing behaviour is insufficient to make accurate prediction about cases in which avoidance will occur.
