| Abstract: | Investigates link between AMO and Arctic ice extent during last century, arguing that time series analysis is more reliable approach than modelling. Describes use of new smoothing algorithm and wavelet analysis to analyze NOAA AMO series for 1856-2007 and Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute's 1900-1999 ice extent series for Russian marginal seas. Discusses power spectra obtained, their coherency, and multidecadal oscillations revealed. Identifies periods of high AMO index magnitudes with those of low ice extent and vice versa, inferring from lag of latter by a few years that North Atlantic water temperature is major regulator of ice extent in Kara Sea. Discusses prospects for predicting switching of AMO. |
