The snow of Kilimanjaro: a critical comment on Numerical Simulations of the Role of Land Surface Conditions on the Climate of Mt. Kilimanjaro Region / Georg Kaser, Ian Allison.
Title: | The snow of Kilimanjaro: a critical comment on Numerical Simulations of the Role of Land Surface Conditions on the Climate of Mt. Kilimanjaro Region / Georg Kaser, Ian Allison. |
Author(s): | Kaser, Georg. Allison, Ian. |
Date: | 2009. |
In: | CLIVAR Exchanges : newsletter of the Climate Variability and Predictability Programme. (2009.), Vol. 14(1) (2009) |
Abstract: | Argues that images published on cover of issue 13(4) gave misleading impression of magnitude of glacial retreat on Kilimanjaro between 1993 and 2000, showing instead changes in transient snow cover. Discusses uses of these and other images to assess effects of climate change on mountain, noting recent assessment of fairly steady monotonic glacier retreat. Discusses different glacier regimes of plateau and slope glaciers, leading to different rates of decrease in area. Assesses likelihood of precipitation and temperature changes being responsible for retreat, and whether land use change has contributed. |
