Abstract: Describes ice stalagmites found at Sugawatari cave, Iwate prefecture and Hyakujyojiki cave, Hokkaido (photographs appear on cover pages of issue). Compares with other unique cave-ice forms and discusses application of stalagmites' mono-crystal structure in skating rinks in Japan and Russia. Includes photographs on cover pages of issue. Discusses development of stalagmite shape and structure, in which formation under slow rate of crystallization, in warm air and from warm water produces single vertical mono-crystal. Discusses material properties arising (very low friction and great strength) and production of "super slippery" ice in rinks. Notes ice in Sugawatari cave forms in mid-winter and melts in May-June and speculates on age of source water.
