Record #187032:

Seasonal and interannual dietary variation during winter in female Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) / Eirin Bjørkvoll, and 4 others.

Title: Seasonal and interannual dietary variation during winter in female Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) / Eirin Bjørkvoll, and 4 others.
Author(s): Bjørkvoll, Eirin.
Date: 2009.
In: Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research. (2009.), Vol. 41(1) (2009)
Abstract: Investigates dietary variation during three winters in female Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) on basis of rumen samples from animals culled in early and late winter between 2000-02. Compares winter diet with late summer diet on basis of samples from 1999. Finds plant availability to be crucial for diet of reindeer during winter; also early winter diet to be intermediate between summer diet (when species of high quality and large biomass are consumed) and late winter diet (which is characterised by presence of species growing in exposed habitats).
