Abstract: Guide for environmental practitioners, industry and regulators in clean-up of petroleum spills and contaminated sites in cold regions (tundra, taiga, alpine and polar terrain). Notes that oil and refined products represent significant proportion of Arctic and Antarctic pollution, at military, industrial and scientific sites, in rural communities and at remote airstrips, and following resource development and transportation mishaps. Bioremediation, through actions of bacteria, fungi and plants, is potentially cost-effective technology for transforming and breaking down hydrocarbon pollution. Discusses regulations, freezing and frozen ground, identification and adaptations of cold-tolerant bacteria, contaminant transport in cold soils and permafrost, temperature effects on biodegradation, analytical methods, treatability studies, nutritional requirements for bioremediation, land farming, and thermally enhanced bioremediation. Emphasises practical and effective methods, using case studies and cost-benefit analyses. Discusses emerging technologies.
