Surging ice and break-down of an ice dome - a deglaciation model for the Gulf of Bothnia / Jan Lundqvist.
Title: | Surging ice and break-down of an ice dome - a deglaciation model for the Gulf of Bothnia / Jan Lundqvist. |
Author(s): | Lundqvist, Jan. |
Date: | 2007. |
In: | GFF. (2007.), Vol. 129(4) (2007) |
Abstract: | Proposes model for deglaciation of Gulf of Bothnia, based on studies of striae in Kvarken area in northern Baltic basin and reinterpretation of stratigraphic sequences earlier interpreted as evidence for readvance of ice margin in Gulf (Gävle oscillation). Model implies quick break-up of ice due to areal thinning of lobe in Gulf and change from cold- to warm-based ice. Wide calving bays formed into ice centre in northern Gulf. Balance change caused sudden collapses and surges on warming base of soft sediments. Ice centre shifted west as ice sheet changed from thick with subaquatic margin to thin and terrestrial, more sensitive to rising temperature at end of Weichselian. |
