| Abstract: | Examines melt season suspended sediment storage and release patterns in relation to hydrological conditions in proglacial zone of rapidly retreating glacier and evaluates findings in light of past daily mean river flow records. Examines records of suspended sediment concentration (SSC), turbidity, discharge and air temperature for proximal station at glacier snout and distal station 600 m downstream. Reports close association between SSC and discharge, with 10-minute turbidity records providing insight into those SSC peaks not coincident with discharge peaks. Study shows rapid change in suspended sediment transport and yields with distance from glacier snout. Discusses implications for predicting impact of climate change on river dynamics and ecology. |
