Record #187005:

Endolithic lichens, rapid biological weathering and Schmidt hammer R-values on recently exposed rock surfaces: Storbreen glacier foreland, Jotunheimen, Norway / John A. Matthews, Geraint Owen.

Title: Endolithic lichens, rapid biological weathering and Schmidt hammer R-values on recently exposed rock surfaces: Storbreen glacier foreland, Jotunheimen, Norway / John A. Matthews, Geraint Owen.
Author(s): Matthews, John A.
Owen, Geraint.
Date: 2008.
In: Geografiska Annaler. Series A. Physical Geography. (2008.), Vol. 4 (2008)
Abstract: Investigates rate of biological weathering on recently exposed rock surfaces, including moraine ridges deposited by glacier in 1980s and 1990s. Aims to: measure effect of endolithic lichens (Lecidea auriculata) on rock hardness on boulder surfaces in 0-88 year age range; compare implied rate of biological weathering with that reported for older surfaces on Storbreen foreland and for biological and non-biological weathering in Arctic-alpine and polar environments more widely; assess implications for exposure-age dating based on Schmidt hammer and other methods. Reports R-values lowered by at least 20 units on surfaces exposed for 30-40 years, implying weathering rates 200-300 times faster than physico-chemical weathering alone.
