The response of partially debris-covered valley glaciers to climate change: the example of the Pasterze glaciers (Austria) in the period 1964-2006 / Andreas Kellerer-Pirklbauer, Gerhard Karl Lieb, Michael Avian, Josef Gspurning.

In: | Geografiska Annaler. Series A. Physical Geography. (2008.), Vol. 4 (2008) |
Abstract: | Examines response to climate change of largest glacier of Eastern Alps, aiming to understand role of variations in supra-glacial debris cover in modification of glacier morphology in cold mountain environments under changing climatic conditions. Concentrates on behaviour differences between adjacent debris-covered and clean ice parts of glacier tongue, analyzing digital elevation models constructed for 1964, 1981 and 2000 and related debris-cover distributions, and comparing them with long-term series of glaciological field data (displacement, elevation change, terminus behaviour). Reports continuous debris cover not less than 15 cm thick reduces ablation rates by 30-35%. |
