Abstract: Presents history of Amchitka Island, used as underground nuclear test site by US Atomic Energy Commission between 1965 and 1971. Notes that, after tests, several scientific assessments have been conducted regarding impact on terrestrial and marine environments surrounding island, but that many citizens and groups continue to voice concerns over potential detrimental effects on human and ecological health. Summarises US Department of Energy's plan for surveillance and monitoring and offers opinions on long-term stewardship of island.
