Sediment release and storage in early deglaciated areas: towards an application of the exhaustion model from the case of Massif des Écrins (French Alps) since the Little Ice Age / Etienne Cossart, Monique Fort.

Title: Sediment release and storage in early deglaciated areas: towards an application of the exhaustion model from the case of Massif des Écrins (French Alps) since the Little Ice Age / Etienne Cossart, Monique Fort.
Author(s): Cossart, Etienne.
Fort, Monique.
Date: 2008.
In: Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift. (2008.), Vol. 62(2) (2008)
Abstract: Examines impacts of glacier waning on functioning of cascade sedimentary system, comparing disruptive signal (glacier variations) with response signal (sediment transfers). Examines effect of temporary sediment traps and whether rate of sediment transfer is consistent with rate of glacier thinning. Studies two glacierized catchments (Celse-Nière, Glacier Noir) where glacial behaviour and shrinking patterns have differed since Little Ice Age, paying special attention to link between glacial margins and glacio-fluvial systems. Reconstructs 20th century variations of glacier tongues in 3-D to document influence of local base-level fluctuations on sediment paths. Surveys main sediment storage units (deglaciated footslope and valley floor) and specifies sediment transfer patterns following glacier retreat.
