Title, transliterated: | O roli lʹda Severnogo Ledovitogo okeana v sezonnoĭ izmenchivosti kont︠s︡entrat︠s︡ii dvuokisi ugleroda v severnykh shirotakh / A.P. Nagurnyĭ. |
Translated title: | On the role of Arctic Ocean sea ice in the seasonal variability of concentrations of carbon dioxide in northern latitudes. |

In: | Meteorologii︠a︡ i Gidrologii︠a︡. (2008.), Vol. 1 (2008) |
Abstract: | Shows for first time that sea ice of Arctic Ocean plays main role in maximum seasonal changes detected in global carbon dioxide distribution. Analyzes direct observations of carbon dioxide concentration made at modern Russian drifting stations. Observes that CO₂ is generated during ice mass growth at lower surface and absorbed at upper boundary of melting ice, and that period of ice growth is three to four times longer than period of summer melting. Argues that Arctic Ocean is therefore source of CO₂ on annual time-scale (Arctic "breathing effect") and that laboratory experiments confirm this. |
