Abstract: Briefly characterizes ice cover discontinuities in Arctic Basin, noting their practical significance for ship navigation and need for forecasting such indicators as prevailing orientation of discontinuities and location of zones of discontinuity closure and formation. Describes development of forecasts based on complex analogues and summarizes forecasts prepared for ships navigating Arctic Basin from 1991 to present. Describes how new technology allows interactive forecasting, and presentation of prognostic information in electronic mapped form to be transmitted directly to ship. Illustrates efficiency of ship navigation using prognostic indicators of ice discontinuities and actual data and discusses forecast quality.
