Abstract: Reports observation of nest of common eiders (Somateria mollissima) from nest initiation to nest termination on Egg Island, Alaska. Resident gulls (Larus hyperboreus) depredated many eider nests, mostly during initiation. All nests failed when Arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) visited islands and flushed hens from nests, exposing eggs to depredation by gulls and foxes. Argues that no species benefited either from nest site selection or predatory activity: island nesting provided no protection from predatory activity; and depredation was of questionable value as most eggs were cached and probably not recoverable (owing to damage from autumn storms).
