| Abstract: | Documents history of study of frozen mounds in peatland (palsa types). Discusses systematic definitions of palsa and composition and ice content. Examines spatial limits of palsa and temperature conditions of growth, especially at northernmost and southernmost localities. Discusses Holocene and modern palsa development within permafrost peatlands in European north of Russia, northern West Siberia, Central Siberia, Yakutiya, Zabaykal'ye and Altay, in Mongolia and China, and in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Svalbard, Iceland, Canada and Alaska. Reconstructs life cycle of permafrost mound through growth and degradation, based on radiocarbon dating of uppermost peat layers, plant remains and palynological data. Examines differential timing for initiation of permafrost throughout peatland. |
