| Abstract: | Analyzes technical and symbolic aspects of fire among reindeer herders of Kamchatka and Chukotka. Presents ethnographic data relating to modalities of fire use in periglacial environments, both prehistoric and contemporary. Examines techniques and materials used for lighting fires; different types of hearths; their various purposes and their specific location. Highlights symbolic role of fire in perpetuating domestication of reindeer through analysis of rules and prohibitions related to use of fire. |
