Abstract: Examines nature of oaths from anthropological point of view. Describes importance of taking oaths (especially oaths of allegiance) in Imperial Russia from 16th century onwards. Analyzes alternative forms of oaths among native animist peoples of Siberia, for example "oath of the bear" for Ob-Ugrians and Nentsy which was devised by Russian authorities. Notes differences in oaths between peoples West and East of Ural mountains.
