Abstract: Investigates molecular basis for lack of lactose in milk composition of Otariidae (fur seals and sea lions) and Odobenidae (walruses) by cloning α-lactalbumin, modifier protein of lactose synthase complex. Mutation was observed which, in addition to preventing lactose production, may enable otariids to maintain lactation despite extremely long inter-suckling intervals during mother's time at sea foraging, which in some species can exceed 23 days.
