Southern Hemisphere humpback whales off Central America: insights from water temperature into the longest mammalian migration / Kristin Rasmussen, and 8 others.

Title: Southern Hemisphere humpback whales off Central America: insights from water temperature into the longest mammalian migration / Kristin Rasmussen, and 8 others.
Author(s): Rasmussen, Kristin.
Date: 2007.
Publisher: [London]: Royal Society Publications
Abstract: Documents migration in 2001-04 of seven individual humpback whales Megaptera novaeangliae, including mother/calf pair, from feeding areas off Antarctic Peninsula to wintering area off Pacific coast of Central America. Whales were observed as far north at 11° N in area also used by boreal population during opposite winter season, resulting in unique spatial overlap between Northern and Southern Hemisphere populations. Occurrence of northerly wintering area is coincident with development of equatorial tongue of cold water in eastern South Pacific, and survey of location and water temperature at wintering areas worldwide indicates that they are found in warm waters (21.1-28.3°C) irrespective of latitude. Discusses influence of water temperature on whale distribution at basin scale, and suggests that calf development in warm water may lead to larger adult size and increased reproductive success, which would support energy conservation hypothesis as reason for migration.
