Abstract: Though invasive house mouse Mus musculus was thought to pose little risk to seabirds, research on sub-Antarctic Gough Island between January and September 2004 showed that house mice were killing chicks of Tristan albatrosses Diomedea dabbenena and Atlantic petrels Pterodroma incerta. Population models show that levels of predation found are sufficient to cause population decreases. Research indicates that restoration programmes to eradicate rats and other introduced mammals from islands may increase number of islands where mice are sole alien mammals (as at Gough Island), and that released from ecological effects of predators and competitors, mice may become predatory on seabird chicks.
