Abstract: Briefly examines main marine jurisdictional zones of UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and their application to Southern Ocean, and other major international treaties and conventions that apply to the region. Considers Australia's seabed jurisdiction in Southern Ocean and new data sets required to define its outer limit, and discusses opportunities for improvement in exploitation of living and non-living natural resources; for petroleum exploration north of 60°S; and for marine geological research with particular reference to break-up of Gondwana, plate tectonics, and role of Antarctica in global climate system.
