Abstract: Presents preliminary findings of comparative analysis of Metis ethnogenesis and historical community development in southern and eastern James Bay regions. Includes synthesis of criteria for Metis ethnogenesis as originally defined by Supreme Court of Canada in R. v. Powley (2003) and as interpreted in recent legal judgments. Examines fur trade records documenting patterns of Aboriginal-European marriage and mixed-ancestry beginning in mid-late 18th century, at three interconnected posts: Moose Factory, Rupert House and Eastmain House.
