Abstract: Examines motif of conflict between wood demon and water sprite represented by bears and sheatfish (also called freshwater catfish) in Russian folk tales. This conflict between bear and inhabitants of water (i.e. dry land and water) is common to most Eurasian folklore. Compares in detail Russian folklore on this motif with those of indigenous Siberian peoples, in particular Nanaytsy, Sel'kupy, Ainu, Eveny, Nivkhi and Eskimosy.
