Record #186042:

Significant conservation benefits obtained from the use of a new fishing gear in the Chilean Patagonian toothfish fishery / C.A. Moreno, and 3 others.

Title: Significant conservation benefits obtained from the use of a new fishing gear in the Chilean Patagonian toothfish fishery / C.A. Moreno, and 3 others.
Author(s): Moreno, C. A.
Date: 2008.
In: CCAMLR Science. (2008.), Vol. 15 (2008)
Abstract: Describes new fishing technique adapted from artisanal trotline fishery for Dissostichus eleginoids in waters off southern Chile, which involved placing net sleeve on secondary vertical lines. Data for September-December 2006 was compared with data for 2002 when modification was not in use. Results show that number of seabirds killed was reduced from 1,542 to zero; and depredation of catch by killer whales and sperm whales was reduced from 5% to 0.36% of total catch. Local name for net sleeve modification is cachalotera, but preferred term is Chilean longline.
