| Abstract: | Examines Russian and Australian primary sources on voyage of first Soviet expedition to Antarctica aboard Ob' and Lena in 1955-57 to construct base for 1957-58 International Geophysical Year. Australian and New Zealand governments were wary of Soviet intentions, due to Cold War tensions and unresolved Antarctic claims, and barely tolerated visits by Soviet expedition, whereas Soviets were careful to underline friendly nature of visits and avoided sensitive political questions. Official lack of enthusiasm for Ob' and Lena entering ports on return voyages is contrasted with generally more enthusiastic attitude of Australian and New Zealand scientists and expedition members with whom Soviet personnel came into contact, some of whom developed lasting scientific relationships with visitors. |
