Abstract: Discusses significant environmental changes experienced by high latitude and high altitude ecosystems at beginning of 21st century. Explains how natural variation in physical parameters of extreme environments is key factor in structuring biodiversity and biotic productivity, and how effect of new stress factors can be critical for population structures and interaction between species. Notes that changes can also have socio-economic effects if they affect bio-production which forms basis for marine and terrestrial food chains.
