| Abstract: | Presents detailed description of freshwater and terrestrial diatom composition of sub-Antarctic Ile de la Possession. Identifies total of 220 diatom taxa belonging to 44 genera, with most diverse genera being Pinnularia (41 taxa), Nitzschia (19 taxa), Psammothidium (13 taxa) and Diadesmis (11 taxa). Includes descriptions of several new species and varieties, especially in genera Diadesmis and Pinnularia, and thorough revision of taxonomy of sub-Antarctic taxa. All taxa are morphologically and ecologically characterized and documented with both LM and SEM micrographs. |
