| Abstract: | Describes spot-like coloration of bill observed on upper mandible of gentoo penguin subspecies ellsworthii found at breeding colonies at Livingston Island in South Shetlands, and at Wiencke Island and Petermann Island off west coast of Antarctic Peninsula. Trait was found with different frequencies at these three locations (20%, 51% and 30% respectively) and varied in diameter from 1-2 mm to 20-25 mm, and in colour from white to red, with yellow, orange and pink intermediate forms. Spot was was recorded among chicks more than two months old and among adult birds, normal and moulting of both sexes. Discusses potential reasons for presence of beak spot, including role in mate choice; environmental changes related to synthesis of melanin or carotenoid pigments; parasite infection; or phenotypic characteristic. |
