Glacier response to climate change / Jim Salinger, Trevor Chinn, Andrew Willsman, Blair Fitzharris.

Title: Glacier response to climate change / Jim Salinger, Trevor Chinn, Andrew Willsman, Blair Fitzharris.
Author(s): Salinger, Jim.
Chinn, Trevor.
Willsman, Andrew.
Fitzharris, Blair.
Date: 2006.
In: Water & Atmosphere. (2006.), Vol. 16(3) (2006)
Abstract: Examines how fluctuating New Zealand glaciers reflect climate change. Introduces concepts of glacier mass balance, equilibrium line and response time, contrasting short response times of steep alpine glaciers with longer response times of long, low-gradient glaciers with insulating cover of debris. Summarises climate regime and glacier response in Southern Alps from Little Ice Age to present. Describes mass balance survey programme begun in 1977 and based on aerial photography to determine snowline elevation. Reports that increased snowfall has allowed smaller glaciers to grow in warming climate, but that large glaciers lost more than 10% of volume from 1976 to 2005, with growth of glacier lakes encouraging retreat of calving termini.
