| Abstract: | Describes how current retreat of Morsárjökull, a southern outlet of Vatnajökull, influences liquid discharge and sediment availability and how fluvial hydrosystem adjusts to new conditions. Describes quantification of glacial retreat and of width of active band of sandur during period 1945-2003. Shows that relationship between glacial retreat rate and fluvial pattern adjustment is not direct. Some landscape units linked to glacial activity, such as moraines and proglacial lakes, alter local sediment balance and disturb alluvial outwash plain response. Jökulhlaups have temporary but significant influence on sediment balance. |
