Record #185628:

Subglacial and intraglacial volcanic formations in Iceland / Sveinn P. Jakobsson, Magnús T. Gudmundsson.

Title: Subglacial and intraglacial volcanic formations in Iceland / Sveinn P. Jakobsson, Magnús T. Gudmundsson.
Author(s): Jakobsson, Sveinn P.
Gudmundsson, Magnús T.
Date: 2008.
In: Jökull. (2008.), Vol. 58 (2008)
Abstract: Reviews subglacially- and aqueously-formed volcanics in Iceland. Summarizes development of ideas, defines basic units of subglacial/subaqueous volcanic edifice and describes most common landforms. Discusses process of palagonization and consolidation. Reviews recent eruptions and constraints they put on rates of subglacial volcanic processes. Landforms discussed include tuyas, tindars, Móberg sheets and a variety proximal sedimentary beds. Periods range from Brunhes epoch at end of Pleistocene to recent eruptions generating tindars, mounds and major jökulhlaups. Suggests that heights of tuyas and tindars indicate formation under glacier less than 1 km thick, i.e., thinner than maximal Weichselian ice sheet, perhaps because eruptions were linked to declining mantle pressure under thinning ice.
