| Abstract: | Presents probabilistic method of avalanche site zoning based on avalanche accident data and statistical modelling. Characterizes each element of territory according to observed long-term avalanche frequency. Considers sites with channelled (gullied) slopes, highly pronounced on terrain, with origin, transit and deposition zones; and sites with unchannelled slopes, pronounced on terrain without clearly definable origin and transit zones. Applies approach avalanche sites Khibiny No. 22 (channelled, 37 avalanches) and Khibiny No. 2 (unchannelled, 92 avalanches). Constructs surfaces of avalanche probability distribution. Reports distribution density of number of territory elements affected by avalanches close to Poisson. Estimates probability of avalanches in ski areas and presents large scale probalistic zoning maps. |
