Record #185518:

Images and imagination in 20th century environmentalism: from the Sierras to the Poles / Denis Cosgrove.

Title: Images and imagination in 20th century environmentalism: from the Sierras to the Poles / Denis Cosgrove.
Author(s): Cosgrove, Denis.
Date: 2008.
Publisher: Arts Catalyst
In: Bipolar. (2008.),
Abstract: Investigates changes in American environmental thinking in 20th century. Examines importance of pictorial images, which have played powerful and continuous role in shaping environmental discourse, and argues that post-environmentalist claim that rationalism has triumphed over sentiment in 20th century environmental discourse is questionable. Cites recent polar bear images as examples of intensification of distancing human subject from natural world, and compares with 1930s images which are more sensitive to idea of co-production of landscapes by human and natural agents.
