Abstract: Proposes mathematical model of charge separation at evaporation and vapour growth of ice and water. Model takes account of competition between two mechanisms, based on protons or Bjerrum defects as charge carriers. Former provides positive charging of ice and water at evaporation while latter provides negative charging. At vapour growth of ice and water, polarity of charging changes sign. Finds proton mechanism prevails at low transformation speeds (less than 10⁻¹¹ m/s for ice and less than 10⁻⁹ m/s for water). Bjerrum defect mechanism dominates at higher speeds. Reports model adequately describes interphase electric current observed experimentally and polarity of phase charging at evaporation and condensation.
