| Abstract: | Uses literature sources, analysis of topographic maps from 1881-1910, photo interpretation and West Caucasus lichen survey to define times of formation of glacial lakes in Greater Caucasus. Bases lake age estimation on relation between maximal diameter of Rhizocarpon geographicum lichen and age of moraine ridges. Reports lichen thallus sizes and age estimates from moraines, rock steps, and fall dams. Maps lake changes due to fluctuations of East Klukhor Glacier since 1985. Discusses relationship between lake formation and glacier fluctuation, concluding that majority of glacial lakes formed during last century, with sizes and forms depending on glacier morphology and dynamics. Most lakes are currently expanding due to glacier recession. |
