| Abstract: | Analyzes literature related to topic of "Antarctic oases". Term first appeared in 1938 as allegory and was used during 1940s and during 1957-58 International Geophysical Year. Reviews scientific discussions of appropriateness of term "oasis" to Antarctic environmental conditions, leading to its international acceptance in 1980s. Observes discrepancy in understanding and usage of term to describe ice-free territories and presents modern definition aimed to minimize confusion. Suggest classification scheme of Antarctic oases based on, and in large part unifying, schemes previously published. |
