Abstract: Reports results of field experiments studying dissolution of water soluble components (WSC) through first-year sea ice. Six oils (five crude oils and one heavy fuel oil) are frozen into sea ice in February, and oil/ice samples are analysed and migration of WSC from oil into ice is quantified during 112-day experiment. Finds WSC content decreases with ice depth, from upper ice surface to seawater interface, and observes concentration gradient as function of time. Results indicate that ice biota could be exposed to toxic WSC in bottommost centimetres of ice and in brine channels, and this could cause potentially toxic oil components to enter Arctic marine food web.
