| Abstract: | Evaluates toxicology, flammability, aggressive solvent nature and long-term liabilities of n-butyl acetate (NBA) in use by US Polar Program since early 1990s as single-component fluid system for ice boring to depths in excess of 300 m. Investigates various compounds suggested as replacement for ozone-depleting substances such as HCFCs, and proposes alternatives categorized as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrofluoroethers (HFEs) as replacements for obsolete densifiers. |
