Abstract: | Explores main ethical norms that influence labour in reindeer herding in European Russian North, Murmanskaya Oblast'. Assumes that Soviet ideological discourse of labour has been reinterpreted in practice. Study is based on field-work on Kola Peninsula in Saami Tundra reindeer herding cooperative, successor of Soviet kolkhoz. Examines social aspects of sovkhizm and observes obshchina as source of conflict between sovkhizm and "Western ideology". In conclusion, considers whether reindeer herding belongs to past rather than future. |
