Global glacier changes: facts and figures / Michael Zemp, Jaap van Woerden.

Title: Global glacier changes: facts and figures / Michael Zemp, Jaap van Woerden.
Author(s): Zemp, Michael.
van Woerden, Jaap.
Date: 2008.
Publisher: Zurich: World Glacier Monitoring Service
Abstract: Reviews state of land ice outside two polar ice sheets, global distribution of glaciers and ice caps and changes since "Little Ice Age". Provides background to understanding compiled glacier observations in context of ongoing climate change. Summarizes glacier-climate relationship, collection/compilation of glacial fluctuation and mass balance data series, global glacier changes, glacier types and causes of changes. Describes regional changes in: New Guinea, Africa, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Central Europe, South America, Northern Asia, Antarctica, Central Asia, North America, Arctic Islands. Concludes ongoing rapid shrinkage may substantially deglaciate many mountain ranges by end of 21st century. Discusses challenges facing monitoring of glaciers and ice caps, including dataset bias towards Northern Hemisphere and Europe.
