Record #185110:

1986-2006: twenty years of research on baleen whales in the Antarctic / Kees Lankester.

Title: 1986-2006: twenty years of research on baleen whales in the Antarctic / Kees Lankester.
Author(s): Lankester, Kees.
Date: 2008.
In: Circumpolar Studies. (2008.), Vol. 4 (2008)
Abstract: Reviews progress in debate on and understanding of science on baleen whales in Southern Ocean since global moratorium on commercial whaling in 1986, focusing on reports and papers of Scientific Committee of International Whaling Commission. Results indicate that studies on breeding grounds, with their associated behaviour and site-fidelity, provide better indication of population status and recovery than do feeding ground studies. Southern right whales and humpback whales are first species to show clear signals of recovery, but potential mixing of blue and pigmy blue whales makes deduction about breeding grounds in Southern Hemisphere from historic catch records difficult. Information from breeding grounds of all balaenopterids is surprisingly limited. In special issue A passion for the Pole : ethological research in polar regions.
