Abstract: Presents analysis of thermohaline circulation of Southern Ocean using steady-state simulation of coupled ice-ocean model, focusing on mechanisms of upper branch of overturning to clarify roles of surface fluxes and internal mixing. Quantitative dynamical analysis of water-mass transformation indicates that surface fluxes, including effect of penetrative solar radiation, produce almost 40 Sv of sub-Antarctic mode water, while about 5 Sv of densest water masses are formed by brine rejection on shelves of Antarctica and in Weddell Sea. Mixing transforms half of sub-Antarctic mode water into intermediate water and upper circumpolar deep water while bottom water is produced by lower circumpolar deep water and North Atlantic deep water mixing with shelf water. Upwelling of part of North Atlantic deep water inflow is due to internal processes, mainly downward propagation of surface freshwater excess via vertical mixing at base of mixed layer.
