Record #184655:

A surge of Skobreen, Svalbard / Monica Sund.

Title: A surge of Skobreen, Svalbard / Monica Sund.
Author(s): Sund, Monica.
Date: 2006.
In: Polar Research. (2006.), Vol. 25(2) (2006)
Abstract: Presents study of currently surging glacier Skobreen, southern Spitsbergen, based on new and archival photographs and maps. Identifies build-up in upper part of glacier and lowering of surface in terminal region between 1936 and 1990 during quiescent phase. Incipient crevassing observed in upper part of glacier in photographs from 1990, and slight advance of terminus and marginal crevassing seen in photographs from 2003, suggest roughly 15-year initiation period. Transverse crevassing appeared in upper part of glacier in 2005, while middle section moved as block with strong shear margins and pronounced surface drawdown. Uses crevasse pattern to identify initiation area, but observes no traces of surge front.
