Abstract: Develops method for quantifying past and current permafrost degradation using detailed wide coverage remote sensing data, DEMs and GIS-based spatial analysis. Applies terrain classification method to complex periglacial Arctic coastal plain in Cape Mamontov Klyk area of Western Laptev Sea region, extracting thirteen terrain classes and characterizing their relevance to thermokarst and degradation of ice-rice deposits. Estimates that 78% of area is affected by permafrost degradation, with density of thermokarst-related development increasing from south to north across coastal plain. Reports 79% overall accuracy, based on ground data. Discusses influence of permafrost degradation on palaeogeography and its significance in current global change scenarios.
