Record #184651:

Glacial history, Holocene shoreline displacement and palaeoclimate based on radiocarbon ages in area of Bockfjorden, north-western Spitsbergen, Svalbard / Otto Salvvigsen, Kirsti Høgvard.

Title: Glacial history, Holocene shoreline displacement and palaeoclimate based on radiocarbon ages in area of Bockfjorden, north-western Spitsbergen, Svalbard / Otto Salvvigsen, Kirsti Høgvard.
Author(s): Salvvigsen, Otto.
Høgvard, Kirsti.
Date: 2006.
In: Polar Research. (2006.), Vol. 25(1) (2006)
Abstract: Examines glacial history of Bockfjorden, a small branch of Woodfjorden. Reconstructs Holocene shoreline displacement curve based on radiocarbon ages from bivalve shells, wood and whale bone. Discusses deglaciation, Holocene glacier retreat, Little Ice Age (LIA) advance, and Holocene marine limit. Shoreline displacement curve shows fjord was deglaciated shortly before 10 kyr BP, when sea level was at upper limit of 50 m a.s.l. Initial shoreline emergence was rapid, with former shorelines younger than 8.5 kyr below present level. Marine transgressions occurred during mid-Holocene and last thousand years. Holocene glaciers of Bockfjorden were generally smaller than today and most extensive during LIA. Marine climate during first half of Holocene was warmer than today.
